I have managed to keep this space relatively free of politics for a long time, now, despite my strong personal beliefs, but this has gone too far.
Remember this speech? Remember watching it? I do. I was sitting in the dining room of a farmhouse in northern Germany, mesmerized by the screen in front of me. I had goosebumps. I had the feeling I was watching something big. That history was being written in front of my eyes.I had the feeling that this moment was something that would last. It was important. I was right.
The man Julia Gillard, then Prime Minister of Australia, was addressing, has recently been elected our new PM. This, I believe, was partially due to his scaremongering campaign tactics, and the division within the Labor party resulting in Kevin Rudd resuming the PMship just 2 months before the election. However, right now the reason is not important.
What is important, is that he has finally announced his ministerial arrangements, and, in addition to abolishing the Science Portfolio (who needs a minister for Science, anyway? Right?), he has named the Womens Minister. Who is it, you ask? Himself.
Yes, the very picture of misogyny you see cowering before JG in this video, is now the man in charge of Womens Affairs in Australia.
How is it possible that something like this can happen? I would also like to add that his cabinet is severely lacking in women all over so it’s not a huge surprise that the womens minister is a man. But this man? Really? I don’t even know what to think about this. I think it’s safe to say that I’ll be watching the next election results from that same farmhouse in northern Germany as well, because that is not something I want to come home to.
I have to do this by myself. I am woman, hear me roar!
